Over the last week, two of the world’s biggest internet companies have faced mounting criticism over how fake news on their sites may have influenced the presidential election’s outcome.
On Monday, those companies responded by making it clear that they would not tolerate such misinformation by taking pointed aim at fake news sites’ revenue sources.
Google kicked off the action on Monday afternoon when the Silicon Valley search giant said it would ban websites that peddle fake news from using its online advertising service. Hours later, Facebook, the social network, updated the language in its Facebook Audience Network policy, which already says it will not display ads in sites that show misleading or illegal content, to include fake news sites.
“We have updated the policy to explicitly clarify that this applies to fake news,” a Facebook spokesman said in a statement. “Our team will continue to closely vet all prospective publishers and monitor existing ones to ensure compliance.”
Taken together, the decisions were a clear signal that the tech behemoths could no longer ignore the growing outcry over their power in distributing information to the American electorate.
Facebook has been at the epicenter of that debate, accused by some commentators of swinging some voters in favor of President-elect Donald J. Trump through misleading and outright wrong stories that spread quickly via the social network. One such false story claimed that Pope Francis had endorsed Mr. Trump.
Google did not escape the glare, with critics saying the company gave too much prominence to false news stories. On Sunday, the site Mediaitereported that the top result on a Google search for “final election vote count 2016” was a link to a story on a website called 70News that wrongly stated that Mr. Trump, who won the Electoral College, was ahead of his Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton, in the popular vote.
By Monday evening, the fake story had fallen to No. 2 in a search for those terms. Google says software algorithms that use hundreds of factors determine the ranking of news stories.
“The goal of search is to provide the most relevant and useful results for our users,” Andrea Faville, a Google spokeswoman, said in a statement. “In this case, we clearly didn’t get it right, but we are continually working to improve our algorithms.”
Facebook’s decision to clarify its ad policy language is notable because Mark Zuckerberg, the social network’s chief executive, has repeatedly fobbed off criticism that the company had an effect on how people voted. In a post on his Facebook page over the weekend, he said that 99 percent of what people see on the site is authentic, and only a tiny amount is fake news and hoaxes.
“Over all, this makes it extremely unlikely hoaxes changed the outcome of this election in one direction or the other,” Mr. Zuckerberg wrote.
Yet within Facebook, employees and executives have been increasingly questioning their responsibilities and role in influencing the electorate, The New York Times reported on Saturday.
Facebook’s ad policy update will not stem the flow of fake news stories that spread through the news feeds that people see when they visit the social network.
Facebook has long spoken of how it helped influence and stoke democratic movements in places like the Middle East, and it tells its advertisers that it can help sway its users with ads. Facebook reaches 1.8 billion people around the globe, and the company is one of the largest distributors of news online. A Pew Research Center study said that nearly half of American adults rely on Facebook as a news source.
Google’s decision on Monday relates to the Google AdSense system that independent web publishers use to display advertising on their sites, generating revenue when ads are seen or clicked on. The advertisers pay Google, and Google pays a portion of those proceeds to the publishers. More than two million publishers use Google’s advertising network.
For some time, Google has had policies in place prohibiting misleading advertisements from its system, including promotions for counterfeit goods and weight-loss scams. Google’s new policy, which it said would go into effect “imminently,” will extend its ban on misrepresentative content to the websites its advertisements run on.
“Moving forward, we will restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher’s content or the primary purpose of the web property,” Ms. Faville said.
Ms. Faville said that the policy change had been in the works for a while and was not in reaction to the election.
It remains to be seen how effective Google’s new policy on fake news will be in practice. The policy will rely on a combination of automated and human reviews to help determine what is fake. Although satire sites like The Onion are not the target of the policy, it is not clear whether some of them, which often run fake news stories written for humorous effect, will be inadvertently affected by Google’s change.

Marvel's The Inhumans Will Now Be a TV Series on ABC
ABC is continuing their partnership with Marvel Television—and in a big way—with the surprising announcement of their latest series.
Marvel's The Inhumans will make its way to the network in the fall of 2017, but not before getting a premiere on the biggest screens. A version of the show's first two episodes will run worldwide exclusively in IMAX theaters for two weeks at the beginning of September. ABC plans to then premiere the weekly series in the fall, with additional exclusive content that will only be seen on the network.
Introduced in ABC's first Marvel series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Inhumans are a race of superhumans with diverse and singularly unique powers. Marvel's The Inhumans will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.
The cross-platform distribution deal is the first of its kind for a television series, as well as marking the first time IMAX has financed a TV show. "This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience," Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney|ABC Television Group, said in a statement. "It highlights Disney|ABC's unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach."
"We're happy to see this unique deal come together, working with our partners," Dan Buckley, President, Marvel Television, Publishing & Brand, added. "In an ever-changing world of distribution and consumption, it's very exciting to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that takes us to the forefront of this evolution."
No further details regarding the show, including who will be showrunner, were readily available.

The best Gaming PC That Costs $13,000
What if money was of little consequence and you wanted a PC for some ultimate high-resolution gaming? Some PC manufacturers are, it seems, willing to go all-out and create the most amazing PC’s ever, complete with enough power to play all the latest 3D games on the new 4K resolution monitors.
PCs are already ahead of even the new Microsoft MSFT +2.93% Xbox One and Sony Playstation 4 when it comes to super-high resolution gaming. The latest PC monitors offer 4K resolution and combined with a sufficiently powerful PC, you can play games at 4K too with no upscaling and sheer jaw-dropping visuals.
The cost of a PC that can do this is likely to be at least $3,000 – $4,000, especially as no current single graphics card can manage decent-enough frame rates at 4K in the latest demanding 3D games such as Battlefield 4 or Crysis 3 with all the eye-candy turned on. This price will come down though, as with all new technology, but if you want that kind of power now there are plenty of options out there
UK-based PC retailer Yoyotech has not only picked and tweaked some of the fastest, most expensive hardware money can buy in the battle to build a 4K gaming PC, but it has also kitted its $13,000 PC out with some of the latest water-cooling gear, with the result that its insides look absolutely incredible.
Called the XDNA Aurum 24K, the PC actually retails for £7979 in the UK, and if you paid attention in school you’ll know that 79 is the atomic number for gold, while Aurum is latin for gold. Chemistry and latin facts aside, the PC sports an incredible specification that is likely to be blisteringly fast not just in games but at anything you can throw at it too.
Yoyotech has chosen Intel's INTC +3.20% Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition processor, which it has tweaked to run faster than it does out of the box, boosting its frequency to 4.6GHz. The CPU also has six cores and thanks to an Intel feature called Hyper-Threading, the total core count stands at 12, which is 50% more than the Xbox One’s processor.
It also has a gargantuan 64GB of Corsair memory, a 512GB solid state disk and 2TB hard disk, all housed in a Corsair Obsidian 900D tower case, which has been modified to hide cables and give the inside a super-clean look.If you know your PC hardware, you’ll know that Nvidia's NVDA +5.45% Titan graphics cards were the most drool-worthy of 2013, and Yoyotech has included not one but two of them. As if this wasn’t enough, both graphics cards and the processor are water-cooled too, doing away with noisy fans and heatsinks and instead creating a blissfully quiet PC that also runs incredibly cool despite its monstrous specification.
The PC managed a minimum frame rate of 31fps in Crysis 3 at 4K using the game’s ultra graphics settings, and a minimum of 26fps in Battlefield 4. So if you use three screens, which usually offer a lower resolution than a 4K monitor, the Aurum 24K is likely to provide massive frame rates.
Of course, this PC demands such a high price that most of us can only dream about owning it. However, it does give a glimpse about what mist be in store in the future for PC’s.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Forget the 5th, this year you want to remember, remember the 4th of November because that’s the official release date of the new Call of Duty game. But where's the cheapest place to buy Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare?
Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, the latest Call of Duty is available in a Standard edition or the slightly more expensive Legacy edition. Really, the only difference between the two versions is that purchasing Legacy also gets you the remaster of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which isn’t available anywhere else just yet.
Of course, since it’s not November 4 just yet you can’t buy Infinite Warfare in stores, but you can pre-order it online for home delivery and store pickup when the big day arrives. To help you make the best decision, we’ve gathered up the best pre-order deals around and placed them here for your perusal.
Standard Edition PS4 and Xbox One
The best deal on the standard edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at the moment can be found in Smyths Toys, which is selling the game on both consoles for £43.99 with the added bonus of a £5 discount if you pre-order before midnight on November 2. The code for securing this discount is ‘PRE5’.
If you miss out on this deal, that doesn’t mean there aren’t others to be had, with the next cheapest retailer being Tesco Direct, where the game is selling for £42.
At time of writing Amazon UK didn't have prices available for the console versions of the Standard Edition.

That said, the discount doesn’t undercut these retailers quite as significantly with the Legacy Edition (it’s only a penny cheaper in some instances) so if you miss out on it before November 2 it’s not quite as galling.

Well, it seems as if I'm not the only one who noticed this hole, as the new 2017 DucatiSuperSport and SuperSport S seem aimed at just that buyer.
The Ducati SuperSport takes the 937 cc Testastretta motor from the Hypermotard 939and puts it into a relaxed sportbike trellis frame, but it moves the power lower in the rev range while also swapping for longer final drive gear ratios. Ducati claim that 80% of the 71.3 pound-feet of torque is available at just 3,000 rpm. They're also added in Ducati's Safety Pack (Bosch ABS and traction control) as well variable riding modes.
As much as I love them, I often dread riding sportbikes on the street. They're uncomfortable, hurt my back and wrists, and are far more jarring when the asphalt gets rough. But, the I get to a fun stretch of road and the riding position makes carving it up a blast. On the flip side, bikes like the Ninja 650 offer a more comfortable riding position that still allows for some sporty riding, but it and bikes like it have always been lacking in the power department.

While it retains the face of the Panigale, the high set clip ons and revised footpeg positioning gives the rider a much more relaxed riding position. The windscreen is moveable, with 50 mm in adjustability for height.
Overall dimensions come in at a 1,478 mm wheelbase, 462 pounds wet, and a 31.9 inch seat heigh. Both bikes get a Brembo braking system with dual 320 mm discs up front and M4.32 calipers. They also get full color TFT screens, LED daytime running light, and an underseat waterproof USB outlet.
The SuperSport is available in one color option, two-tone Ducati Red and Saturn Grey, and it comes with a red frame and black wheels. It gets a fully adjustable 41 mm Marzocchi fork and Sachs shock that's adjustable for spring pre-load and rebound damping.
The SuperSport S comes in both Ducati Red and Star White Silk, and gets a fully adjustable 48 mm Ohlins fork and fully adjustable Ohlins rear shock. It also gets auto up/down shift (an option on the non-S), and a color coordinated rear seat cowl.
In addition to the two models, Ducati has two customization "packs" you can outfit your SuperSport with as well as a host of other accessories.
The "Sport Pack" includes a carbon front mud guard, carbon fuel tank cover, articulated racing lever kit, and billet aluminum covers for the front and rear brake reservoirs.
The "Touring Pack" contains a pair of semi-rigid side panniers, a larger windscreen for touring, and heated grips.
n addition, things like an Akrapovic performance exhaust, Ohlins steering damper, hand guards, a rear LED indicators, a bluetooth module for the multimedia system, and full range of carbon and billet bits exhaust for your farkling pleasure.
Personally, I can't wait until we get a ride on this thing. I love the motor, and think the riding position and aim of this bike will quickly make it one of the best options for a lot of guys who like owning and riding a sportbike, but rarely have time to make it to the track.
From what we hear, the bike will retail for $12,995 for the regular model and $14,795 for the S, and be available next April.

Glastonbury confirms Radiohead will headline in 2017
Rock group Radiohead will headline Glastonbury next year, in their first UK festival appearance in six years.
Rumours that the band would return to Worthy Farm began to circulate on Wednesday, when the band's logo appeared near the Pyramid stage.
Eagle-eyed fans saw two men painting the "angry bear" symbol onto the grass via the BBC's Glastonbury webcam.
The festival confirmed the news on Thursday afternoon, posting a photo of the logo on its official Twitter page.
"YES! Radiohead will be back at Worthy Farm and we really can't wait," wrote organiser Emily Eavis on Instagram.
The band will play the opening night of the festival on 23 June, 2017 - marking their first UK festival appearance since 2011, when they played a "secret set" on Glastonbury's small, outlying Park Stage.
Other headliners have yet to be confirmed, although The Stone Roses, Foo Fighters and Lady Gaga have all been rumoured.
French dance duo Daft Punk were also through to be in the running, but organiser Eavis recently shot that one down, telling fans: "As ever, 99% of the rumours are untrue!"
Earlier this week, rock band Kings of Leon also told the BBC they were keen to return to the Pyramid stage.
"We love Glastonbury. I think that was the first festival we ever played in Europe," said drummer Nathan Followill, before asking: "Do they still do it where it's on one year, off one year to let the grass grow?"
On being told that the next fallow year was 2018, he replied: "OK, then we'll have to get on it in 2017. I'll have to text Mr Eavis."
Emily Eavis: "They're as good as it gets"
I've grown up with Radiohead and they're about as good as it gets for me. They're just in a league of their own aren't they? Some of my happiest memories at the festival have been watching them play, from headlining in the rain 20 years ago when I was a teenager, to surprise sets in The Park and DJ'ing late night in Shangri-La. We are beyond excited that they're finally coming back to the Pyramid, it's incredibly special for everyone here.
Radiohead have headlined Glastonbury twice before, in 1997 and 2003 (you can still watch the former on BBC iPlayer). Guitarist Ed O'Brien recently told BBC 6 Music he would "love to" reprise the experience.
"I go to Glastonbury every year, it's my carnival," he told Matt Everitt's First Time programme.
"To be asked to play at Glastonbury again would be magic. I also think Glastonbury is like our spiritual home. It is the mother of all festivals... there's nothing like that one... it would be great to play there."
The band, whose ninth album A Moon Shaped Pool went to number one earlier this year, have recently played a handful of international festivals, including Primavera, Summer Solstice and Lollapalooza, but their only UK dates in 2016 were held at London's 1,700-capacity Roundhouse.
Coincidentally, their symbol was co-designed by artist Stanley Donwood, who creates all of Glastonbury's posters and logos.
The 2017 festival has already sold out, but there will be a resale of any returned tickets in the spring.
